Segment Migration Dashboard
An anonymized dashboard-format analytic tracking how donors move between giving tiers over time, safe to share with AI tools for cultivation strategy.
How to use the Segment Migration Dashboard
This is a dashboard-format analytic that tracks how donors move between giving tiers over time. It is built on the anonymized data from analyses QX17 (graduation rates), QX136 and QX137 (annual segment transition statistics), QX163 (a five-year migration summary), and QX237 (donor-level migration detail). Because all personally identifying information has been removed, even the donor-level migration detail can be shared with AI tools for cultivation strategy.
The tabs let you watch your donor base as a system in motion rather than a set of static tiers. Graduation rates show how often donors climb from one segment to the next, the annual transition statistics show the full flow of donors moving up, down, or out each year, and the five-year summary reveals whether, over the longer run, your base is strengthening or eroding. The anonymized detail lets you see which kinds of donors migrate in which direction.
The strategic value is that migration is the engine behind your revenue trajectory. A base where more donors are graduating upward than sliding down will grow even if acquisition holds steady, and identifying the tiers with strong upgrade potential, or dangerous downgrade rates, tells you exactly where cultivation and retention effort belongs. With the data anonymized, you can also use an AI tool to model migration scenarios and to help design tier-specific cultivation plans.
You should review this annually as part of strategic planning, alongside your development director and leadership. Target cultivation at the segments with strong upgrade potential, shore up the tiers with high downgrade rates, and feed the anonymized migration patterns to an AI assistant to help shape the plan.
Measure success by rising graduation rates, by a favorable balance of upgrades over downgrades year to year, and by a five-year migration trend that shows the base strengthening.
