How to use the Concentration Risk - Top 100 and Gift Size Pyramid Dashboards
This is a dashboard-format analytic that gives you additional visual references to your donor concentration and your gift-size pyramid. It is built on the data from these analyses: QX42 (Top 100 Donor Concentration LFY), QX41 (Giving Pyramid Analysis LFY), and QX179 (Giving Pyramid Detail - Donor View CFY).
The Top-N Concentration view shows the cumulative share of total giving captured as you move from your top 1 donor out through your top 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100, alongside the donor counts at each level. The Donor vs Revenue Split and Revenue By Tier views show how your donors and your dollars distribute across gift-size tiers, making plain the familiar pattern where a small number of donors provide a large share of revenue.
The strategic value is quantified risk and structure. Seeing that your top 100 donors account for a large share of revenue tells you how exposed you are to the loss of even a few relationships, and the pyramid views show whether your base has healthy tiers feeding the top or is dangerously top-heavy. Together they inform how you balance major-gift stewardship against broadening the base.
You should review this at least annually with leadership, and more often if concentration is high. Use the concentration curve to quantify risk for your board, prioritize stewardship of the donors who carry the base, and use the pyramid detail to spot where donors might be moved up a tier.
Measure success by a stable or declining share of revenue resting on your very top donors, by growth in the number of donors in the tiers just below the top, and by movement up the pyramid over time.
