How to use the Acquisition and New-Donor Journey Dashboard

This is a dashboard-format analytic that examines the top of your funnel and the critical early conversions that turn a first-time giver into a lasting donor. It is built on the anonymized data from analyses QX57 and QX58 (acquisition volume by year and month), QX14, QX15, and QX220 (first-to-second and second-to-third gift conversion), and QX239 (last fiscal year's new-donor detail). With all personally identifying information removed, the new-donor detail can be shared safely with AI tools to shape onboarding strategy.

The tabs show both the volume and the quality of acquisition. You can see how many new donors you brought in by year and by month, which reveals the seasonality and the campaigns that work, and then follow those donors through the fragile early steps of their journey, from first gift to second and from second to third. Those conversion rates matter enormously, because a donor who makes a second gift is dramatically more likely to become a long-term supporter.

The strategic value is that acquisition is wasted without conversion. Knowing exactly where new donors fall away, most often between the first and second gift, tells you where a well-designed onboarding effort will pay off most. Because the data is anonymized, you can hand the recent new-donor detail to an AI tool to help design and draft a second-gift onboarding sequence grounded in your own acquisition patterns.

You should refresh this each month and review it with the annual giving and marketing teams. Focus on improving second-gift conversion for your most recent acquisitions, and use an AI assistant on the anonymized detail to build a targeted onboarding journey.

Measure success by rising first-to-second and second-to-third gift conversion rates, by growth in new-donor acquisition volume, and by improved long-term retention of each new cohort.
